Worded in such a way that would lead to confusion

We needed a way to confuse things, to make sure it would never happen again. We needed a dupe, someone in the field who could cross the borders unidentified.

When, in the morning his identity discovered, unreachable by telex, phone or telegraph, we assumed the worst.

Our fears were confirmed when he did not make the meetup point. He could have defected, many did in those days. And maybe he had enough, and it was time to find another, four men standing around in suits on a December morning, having lost.
